Overview

Understanding Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a mood condition involving periods of elevated or irritable mood and increased energy (mania or hypomania), and often periods of depression. These shifts are different from everyday ups and downs.

Because symptoms can overlap with other conditions, a careful evaluation by a qualified clinician is important. Ongoing care often involves medication management and regular monitoring.

What some people experience

Common Experiences

Everyone’s experience is different. Some people may notice:

  • Periods of unusually high energy, activity or confidence
  • Needing much less sleep without feeling tired
  • Racing thoughts or talking much faster than usual
  • Impulsive decisions that feel out of character
  • Periods of low mood, low energy or hopelessness
  • Mood changes that affect relationships, work or school

This list is for general education and is not a diagnostic tool. If any of this sounds familiar, consider talking with a qualified clinician.
