Preparing a few questions ahead of time can help you feel more comfortable and get the most from your first mental health appointment. Here are some ideas to consider.

Practical questions

  • Do you accept my insurance, or what self-pay options are available?
  • How long is the first appointment?
  • Is telehealth an option for me?
  • What should I bring or complete beforehand?
  • What is your cancellation policy?
  • How do I reach the office between appointments?

Questions about care

  • What services do you provide?
  • How will we decide on a treatment plan?
  • How often will I have appointments?
  • How will we know if treatment is helping?
  • What happens if I need a different type of care?

Questions to ask yourself

  • What are the main concerns I want to talk about?
  • When did I first notice these changes?
  • What have I already tried?
  • What would feeling better look like for me?
