Telehealth has made mental healthcare more accessible for many people. If you’ve never had a virtual appointment, here’s what you can generally expect.
Before your appointment
- Check your technology. You’ll typically need a smartphone, tablet or computer with a camera, microphone and reliable internet.
- Find a private space. Choose somewhere you can talk openly without being overheard.
- Test your connection. Join a few minutes early in case you need to troubleshoot.
- Have information ready. Keep a list of medications and questions nearby.
During the visit
A telehealth visit is much like an in-person appointment. Your provider will ask how you’re doing, listen to your concerns, and discuss options. You can ask questions at any time.
Tips for a better experience
- Use headphones for extra privacy.
- Sit facing a light source so your provider can see you clearly.
- Silence notifications to minimize distractions.
- Have a phone number ready in case the video connection drops.
When in-person care may be better
Telehealth isn’t the right fit for every situation. Some evaluations, safety concerns or clinical needs may be better addressed in person. Your provider will talk with you about what’s most appropriate.
Telehealth availability depends on the service, provider, patient location, licensure, and applicable requirements.
